Samvel Karapetyan (Самвел Карапетян) is an Armenian-Russian businessman, property developer and billionaire. Karapetyan was born in 1965 in Soviet Armenia, now known as Tashir. He is the founder and owner of the Tashir Group and has a net worth of around US$5.3 billion.
Samval Karapetyan completed his education at Yerevan Polytechnic Institute in Armenia in 1986. In 1990 he returned to Russia.
The first step in Karapetyan’s career in the real estate sector was managing a shopping centre project. In 1997 he was appointed in the role of president of Kalugaglavsna OAO, a logistics services company in Kaluga. Karapetyan worked at Kalugaglavsna for two years before launching Tashir Group in 1999.
Business Dealings – Tashir Group and Kaskad Holdings
Tashir Group is a multi-faceted business operating in a variety of industries, including construction, retail, finance, power, development, restaurants and manufacturing. Tashir Group has a formidable force of over 45,000 employees working for them at more than 200 companies. The Group is one of the major commercial real estate developers in Russia and owns more than 30 shopping centres throughout Russia under the brand name of RioMall. Tashir also owns ten hotel chains that operate over 25 Russian regions and nine office centres. A revenue stream of US$610 million was collected by the group in 2015 for leased space. Despite the financial crisis, Karapetyan continues to buy property. In May 2015 Forbes reported that he plans to invest a further US$800 million to build over four million square feet of residential, office and retail space. Karapetyan’s business empire is rumoured to include business dealings with tourism and construction officials in Armenia’s capital city, Yerevan.
Kaskad Holdings was launched under the umbrella of Tashir Group with the aim of venturing into power, construction, infrastructure and civil facilities projects.
Home and Family Life
Samvel Karapetyan is married and has two sons and a daughter. He has a brother named Karen who is a member of the National Assembly and a politician from the Republican Party of Armenia.
Recognition and Awards
In 2011 Karapetyan was given the Mesrop Mashtot Medal by the Armenian president. The medal is given in honour of his, ‘significant contribution to the promotion of national interests, long term and fruitful pro-Armenian activities, dedication to the development and advancement of the Republic of Armenia’. In 2012 he was chosen as the ‘Personality of the Year’ in the ‘Russian Country of Honour’ program.
In March 2013 Samvel Karapetyan became known as the wealthiest ethnic Armenian in the world when he overtook Kirk Kerkorian in wealth. Kirkorian is an Armenian-American businessman. As in May 2015 Karapetyan had an estimated net worth of US$5.3 billion according to Forbes, a staggering US$1.3 billion more than what was estimated only three months before that in February 2015 when his wealth was estimated at US$4 billion. The drastic increase in net worth made Karapetyan the 29th richest person in Russia, and also put him in the 353rd slot of the World Billionaires list.
