Vasily Anisimov – Metallurgy, Banking and Property Tycoon
Vasily Anisimov is a Russian billionaire who made his fortune in a variety of industries including metallurgy, banking and property. He has an estimated wealth of between US$1.2 and US$3.4 billion and resides in Moscow. Anisimov also has a residence in New York. He is one of the 30 richest people in Russia and in the top 400 wealthiest people in the world. Vasily Anisimov is known as being a self-made billionaire.
It is speculated that Vasily Anisimov was born in 1951 or 1952 in Moscow, Russia. This would make him 65 or 66 in 2017. He studied at the Alma-Ata Institute of National Economy where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree. Anisimov generally keeps a low profile, and unlike many of his fellow Russian billionaires, he is not often seen at social events. Because of his high regard for privacy not much else is known about the billionaire’s early years.
Career in Wholesale, Banking and Metallurgy
Between 1986 and 1989 Vasily Anisimov worked as the general director of Roshkhoztorg, a hardware wholesale company located in Moscow. In the early 1990s he started investing in banks and made lucrative investments in metallurgy through his aluminium plant called Metalloinvest. In 2000 Mikhail Khodorkovsky, another Russian businessman and billionaire took Anisimov to court and as a result Anisimov liquidated the majority of his assets. By 2004 he had bounced back after once again launching himself as a co-owner of Metalloinvest. Anisimov’s new partners were two fellow Russian billionaires Andrei Skoch and Alisher Usmanov. Skoch and Usmanov are both well-known in the mining and metals industry in Russia. After re-emerging in the Russian business scene Anisimov expanded his asset portfolio to include property and sport.
Other Business Interests
Vasily Anisimov accumulated great wealth through Metalloinvest and also through dabbling in property development. Through his real estate company Coalco Anisimov acquired 44,000 acres of land close to Moscow and reserved a section of the land for a high-end project that involves developing a well-appointed property village called Akulinino. The site became prime property with high profile Russians like the billionaire Arkady Rotenberg and the president of Russian Railways Vladimir Yakunin building houses there. Anisimov is close friends with Rotenberg.
Family and Personal Life
Vasily Anisimov was married to Galina Anisimova and they had four children together. Although the billionaire enjoys his privacy, his daughter Anna is quite different to her father. Hailed by the media as Russia’s version of the hotel heiress and socialite Paris Hilton, the former model Anna Anisimova is well-known in the Manhattan social circles as a socialite and as the owner of prime New York properties. Anisimova was married once before his marriage to Galina and also had a daughter from this previous marriage. Tragically this daughter and her husband were murdered in 2000 in Russia. In addition to his vast and varied business interests and family life, Vasily Anisimov has an interest in Judo and heads the Judo Federation of Russia.
